On 26 May 2016 UNFPA hosted the annual Take a Girl Child to Work event with 13 grade 10 girls from schools in Pretoria, namely, Dansa International School, Pretoria Girls High School and Founders Community School.  The goal of the Take a Girl Child to Work Day initiative is to "deepen the thinking of the girl child with regard to their infinite roles in society, enhance her self-esteem, inspire and motivate her to reach her full potential and through exposure to diverse careers and positive role models assist her to prepare for the world of work.”

Staff from other UN agencies participated in the event, with Noloyiso Tsembeyi from the UN Office of the Resident Coordinator, inspiring the girls to take charge of their lives,  Nolundi Maselana, an Intern at United Nations Information Centre, giving the girls insight into being an Intern at the UN and Hope Kabamba, the Librarian at the UN, providing valuable information on using the UN library as a resource centre.

Closing off, Dr Esther Muia, emphasised the need for the girls to continue their studies

“as educated girls with a highly developed sense of responsibility are more likely to provide a better future for themselves as well as for their communities.”
