In a powerful show of solidarity and political will, over 40 Members of Parliament from G20 nations, African countries, and key donor states signed a Statement of Commitment on Women’s Health at the G20 Parliamentary Conference on “The Economic Benefits of Investing in Women’s Health in Cape Town on 5- 6 May 2025.
Hosted by the European Parliamentary Forum for Sexual and Reproductive Rights (EPF) in collaboration with UNFPA, the two-day conference brought together lawmakers to spotlight the urgent need for increased investment in women’s health and rights. The statement, adopted at the close of the conference, will be formally presented to the G20 presidency.
The signed declaration reflects a unified commitment to:
-
Reaffirm global agreements on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR),
-
Prioritise sustainable investment in women’s health,
-
Bridge the funding gap in sexual and reproductive services,
-
Counter growing anti-gender narratives,
-
Promote STEM education for girls and digital innovation in health,
-
Empower youth participation in policy development.
“This is more than a political gesture—it’s a roadmap for transformative action,” noted Ragaa Said, UNFPA Strategic Partnerships Adviser for CSOs and Parliamentarians.
The adoption of the Statement marks a pivotal moment in reinforcing the role of parliaments as champions of gender equality, youth empowerment, and sustainable development. It also sends a strong message ahead of G20 negotiations: women’s health is not just a human rights issue—it’s an economic imperative.
UNFPA, as a key partner in global SRHR, will continue supporting governments and parliaments to implement this vision, ensuring that no woman or girl is left behind.
