Learning exchanges are vital platforms for fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing between countries, particularly in addressing complex social issues such as Gender-Based Violence (GBV). By facilitating the exchange of experiences, best practices, and innovative solutions, these programs empower nations to strengthen their response mechanisms and improve service delivery to survivors. Learning from established models like South Africa's Thuthuzela Care Centers and corporate initiatives such as Anglo American's "Living with Dignity" program enables countries like Lesotho to adopt and adapt proven strategies, enhancing their capacity to tackle GBV effectively. Ultimately, such exchanges contribute to building stronger, multi-sectoral systems that promote dignity, safety, and support for all.

South Africa hosted a pivotal learning exchange, bringing together the Ministry of Gender, Youth, and Social Development of Lesotho and key South African stakeholders from 19 to 23 August 2024. Organized, in partnership with the Department of Youth Persons with Disabilities and supported by UNFPA, this exchange aimed to enhance Lesotho's response to Gender-Based Violence (GBV) through firsthand insights into South Africa’s comprehensive GBV support systems.

During the visit, the Lesotho delegation explored several critical initiatives, including the Thuthuzela Care Centres (TCCs). These centres are renowned for their integrated approach to supporting GBV survivors, offering a range of services from medical care to legal support within a single location. The delegation also gained insights into Anglo American’s “Living with Dignity” programme, which addresses GBV comprehensively in the company. Additionally, they learnt about other significant national programmes focused on ending GBV in South Africa.

The primary goal of this exchange was to strengthen Lesotho’s multi-sectoral response to GBV by adopting best practices and models observed in South Africa. UNFPA is providing crucial financial and technical support for this mission, reflecting its commitment to improving GBV services and support systems.

This exchange represented a vital opportunity for both countries to collaborate on effective strategies for combating GBV and enhancing support for survivors
