Half. That’s the share of all pregnancies that are unintended. Nothing is more fundamental to bodily autonomy than the ability to decide whether or not to become pregnant. Yet for too many, the most life-altering reproductive choice is no choice at all. Women are more likely to experience an unintended pregnancy when they have fewer choices and less power.

Young people's access and barriers to SRHR services in South Africa
Developed by the South African Action Coalition on Bodily Autonomy and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). Through new international Action Coalition on Bodily Autonomy and SRHR, UNFPA is championing access to contraception and comprehensive sexuality education and promoting measures that will empower women and adolescents to make autonomous decisions about their own bodies. The coalition also supports the right to bodily integrity and acts to end female genital mutilation and child marriage.

Summary of findings. Evidence indicate that intimate partner violence (IPV) is disturbingly high among South African adolescent girls and young women (AGYW). Understanding prevalence and risk factors for IPV among these emerging adults is critical for developing appropriate interventions to prevent adverse health outcomes later in life.
